The National Hurricane Center (NHC) confirmed Tropical Storm Grace became a hurricane over the northwestern Caribbean Sea on Wednesday, August 18.
The storm reached the Cayman Islands on August 18, after passing over Haiti and Jamaica. It is expected to move toward Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, the NHC said.
This footage from Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman shows gusty winds and broken palms littering sidewalks on Wednesday morning. Street flooding was reported throughout Grand Cayman.
Heavy rainfall and a “dangerous” storm surge were expected across the Cayman Islands, the NHC said. The agency warned of possible mudslides in the state of Veracruz, Mexico.
