To be able to understand, to be able to interpret poetry, you need to have the ability to recognise abstract ideas and the effects they have. You need to define the value of these concepts and how they shape meaning. What is Abstract? Abstract refers to any idea or concept which refers to something that is not ‘real’ or not tangible. The abstract cannot be seen, touched, heard, tasted or smelled in a real and definite way, e.g. Love is a gateway to the soul. Recognising Abstract Ideas Recognising abstract ideas is not always simple, but the basic method is to search for ‘intangibles’. Intangibles are not physical: • emotions such as love • motivations such as greed • ideas such as freedom • qualities such as talent are all abstract terms. Understanding Abstract Ideas Think carefully, and look at emotional and philosophical questions or points the poem is trying to raise. The answers may not always be clear at first, and therein is one of the challenges of poetry – understanding what someone is trying to say. However, there are always multiple answers; that is, understanding is anything you can support in an argument. Defining and Relating Abstract Ideas In other words, you are speaking for what the poet is trying to convey in their poem and how this use of language, combined with metaphor and concrete ideas, illustrates the poet’s point of view and message. By relating an abstract term to a block of concrete or metaphorical terms, you are giving it as a statement with more meaning. Writing about Abstract Ideas For instance, If a poet says ‘love is a bridge’ Love is abstract, the bridge is a metaphor. The meaning comes from whatever you think: ‘By stating love is a bridge, the poet suggests that love is something that can connect two separate points together.’ 0:00 Introduction 1:39 What is Abstract? 5:09 Recognising Abstract ideas 6:52 Understanding Abstract Ideas 11:53 Defining and Relating Abstract Ideas 14:45 Writing about Abstract Ideas
