Co-Management of nature reserves in Suriname

Published 26 Apr 2016

Suriname has dedicated over 13% of its surface to nature reserves. This means almost 10 million hectares of pristine rainforest needs to be monitored. How could we better monitor our forest than by using the skills and knowledge of traditional amerindian and tribal communities, who for ages have been living in the forest and protecting it. Co-management is the way to go to keep Suriname the greenest country on earth and at the same time ensuring sustainable incomes for traditional communities.
