What makes our phones smart? - SOC ------------------------------------------------------------- In this age of digitisation, the one thing that we have on us is undoubtedly the smartphone. Some smartphones are great while some are just awesome. Some sell on their brand value whereas some sell on their hardware and software specifications. But what is the one common thing that all these smartphones have. It is the SOC. SOC stands for system on chip. This one chip on our smartphone is responsible for all the tasks performed by the mobile device. Be it calls, wifi or cellular connectivity, display capabilities or even a camera, everything is handled by the SOC. So what is exactly a SOC and what are it's components. Check out the whole video to understand the SOC in a fun yet informative way. The video also talks about the differences between different SOC's. We all have heard about ARM. We also have heard about Qualcomm snapdragon, Samsung Exynos, Mediatek Helio, Broadcom and so on. So what are these companies and what do they do exactly? Well check out the video to find answers to these questions. We have discussed some SOC's like Qualcomm snapdragon 625, snapdragon 650, snapdragon 835, mediatek helio P-25 to make this video as practical as possible to have a better understanding on the components. The video also discusses the concept of blueprints and licensing of the processors. Some examples of ARM processors like ARM Cortex A-9, Cortex A-53, Cortex-72 are also used for added information. The dye technology which drastically improves the CPU performance and power usage is also discussed. The differences between finfet 14nm and 22nm transistor technology are clearly explained using different analogies to understand how power usage and performance of an SOC can be improved. An easier explanation for the number of processor cores and how it affects the task completion is also discussed using different analogies for ease of understanding. The different cores described are dual-core, quad-core, octa-core, deca-core. SOC speeds are also affected by the clock speed on which they work. Examples of some clock speeds are 2GHz, 2.6GHz.
